The referendum would have asked voters to approve increasing the local option sales tax rate to 2.75% across the county (for a total sales tax of 9.75%, including the state’s 7% sales tax).
Piney Flats businessman Chris Laisure was approved on two bids on the property: one by the Sullivan County school board and the other by the Sullivan County Commission. A half-acre school system parcel also is to be transferred over to him after a deed restriction is addressed.
The Sullivan County school board and the County Commission at concurrent meetings May 7 could vote to accept one of two bids on two parcels — one owned by the school system, including the majority of the property and the school, and the other a piece of land owned by the county.
Sullivan County’s school system lost nearly .36% of its WFTE-ADA compared to last year. That’s less than four-tenths of 1% and not close to the 2% decrease school system officials used to develop their budget for this year.
A work session will be 4 p.m., followed by the regular meeting at 5 p.m.
Among the four are one three-way contest for District 5 and the opportunity for another three-way race in District 1.
“Everyone is going to be paid,” Board of Education Chairman Michael Hughes said.
No public will be allowed to attend, but it will be viewable online via YouTube.
Newcomer Mark Harris would join incumbent Mark Ireson, who also has filed a petition, and former Director of Schools Evelyn Bales, who has picked up but not filed a petition.
Unlike the 1957 laws, the 1981 version includes the management of school funds just like all other county funds.
