Bearden ends D-B soccer's run in region semis

From staff reports • Oct 23, 2019 at 4:30 PM

KNOXVILLE — Bearden continued to be a thorn in the side of the Dobyns-Bennett soccer programs Tuesday night.

The Lady Bulldogs (16-2-1) defeated the Lady Indians 8-0 in the Region 1-AAA girls semifinals — ending D-B’s season just as they did on the boys’ side this past May.

Emilee Lane, Callie Stidham and Blaire Barrett all had shots attempts for D-B (6-8-1), which got double- digit saves from goalkeeper Ellie Nash.

Coach Tony Weaver also had praise for the defensive efforts of Annabeth Parker, Emilee Lane, Kinzee Mounger, Audra Steadman and Maddie France in keeping the match from being mercy-ruled.

“I’m so proud of the girls. We didn’t make it to the district finals last year and we didn’t make it to the regions,” Weaver said. “We showed major improvement throughout the year and that’s all you can ask.”

SEYMOUR 5, SULLIVAN CENTRAL 0

SEYMOUR — The Lady Cougars trailed just 2-0 at the half before falling to the Lady Eagles in the Region 1-AA semifinals.

Jaelyn West made 14 saves and Baily Meade posted an outstanding defensive effort.

“They were frustrated with us at halftime,” Central coach Emily Robinette said. “We gave them a better game than they thought we would. We played good defense, but we just didn’t have the offense. We did the best we could.”

Riley Patrick led Central with three shot attempts, an effort that came as a surprise after she’d been questionable for the match. After scoring three goals in a district tournament win over Elizabethton, Patrick was injured during the first five minutes against Greeneville.

JOHNSON CITY — Five players scored for the Lady Hilltoppers, who used a quick start to take control of the Region 1-AAA semifinal early.

Tori Sparks, Megan Burleson and Paige Carlsen gave Science Hill a 3-0 halftime lead. Ariana Rodriguez and Lina Powell scored after halftime.

The Lady Hilltoppers host Bearden in Thursday’s regional championship match.
