KINGSPORT — There will be an increased police presence at Dobyns-Bennett High School on Wednesday in light of a threatening note found in the school on Tuesday.

According to the Kingsport Police Department and officials with Kingsport City Schools, a note was found in the school shortly before noon. The note, which was threatening in nature, was discovered by a student who subsequently turned it in to school administration.

The note suggested a potential threat at the D-B campus on Wednesday, said Andy True, assistant superintendent of administration for Kingsport City Schools. Kingsport police were immediately notified, True said, and together with school administration, an investigation got underway.

“Obviously, student safety is always going to be our top priority, and because of this, this situation is being taken very seriously,” True said.

Photographs of the note were taken prior to it being turned over to authorities, and those photos are already being circulated via social media, said Tom Patton, public information officer for the Kingsport Police Department.

“This has understandably started to create fear and alarm throughout the community, particularly with parents and families of students,” Patton said.

There was an increased police presence at the school on Tuesday and there will be again on Wednesday, Patton said. Since this situation is an active criminal investigation, no further details are available for release at this time.
