DUFFIELD — Veterans from Scott County and surrounding areas are sharing their mementoes with the community in honor of Veterans Day.

For the eighth year, Powell Valley National Bank has set up an extensive veterans display at its Duffield location. Organizer Kenny Fannon said the display includes medals, photos and a variety of other items that have been temporarily donated by local veterans.

“We’ve got a couple silver stars down there, and my brother’s bronze star … and his purple heart,” Fannon said. “We’ve got three or four purple hearts, we’ve got uniforms, we’ve got discharges. Anything pertaining to the military, we’ve got it down there.”

A veteran himself, Fannon came up with the idea for the display as a way to bring more awareness to Veterans Day.

“What bothers me is we advertise and do all this stuff for Halloween, and then I ask people what they’re going to do for the next holiday, and they say Christmas. … I say, there are two holidays before that, and that’s Veterans Day and Thanksgiving,” Fannon said. “We’ve forgotten those two days just about.”

The items will remain on display at the bank until the Monday after Veterans Day. Community members are welcome to view the display during the bank’s normal operating hours of 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Monday through Thursday and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday.

“My youngest brother got killed in Korea, and of course, I served my time, too,” Fannon said. “I just don’t think we’re doing veterans right, and I thought this would be a little incentive to maybe get people interested in being more conscientious about what veterans do or what they’ve done.”
