Layne goes for 28, South keeps command of TRC

MOUNTAIN CITY — Sullivan South pulled away late from Johnson County to stay unbeaten in Three Rivers Conference boys basketball action.

Up by seven points with five minutes to go, the Rebels raced to a 77-63 win at Shoun Gymnasium on Tuesday night.

Cole Layne led the South charge with 28 points. Ben Diamond poured in 15 and Nick Ellege finished with 13 for the Rebels (19-3, 7-0).

Michael Oxentine had a double-double of 20 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Longhorns. Johnson County (7-19, 1-6) led most of the first half before South rallied to tie the game at 43 at the break.

Lucas Phillips produced an 18-point effort for the Longhorns and Clayton Cross added 13 points.

DAVID CROCKETT 57, CHEROKEE 42

JONESBOROUGH — The Pioneers knocked down 11 shots from 3-point range, but the Big 7 Conference victory didn’t come easy.

The Chiefs (8-13, 1-6) survived the long-range attack deep into the game. Early in the fourth quarter, Cherokee pulled within six points, 44-38, and appeared to be ready to make a move. But Crockett (13-8, 4-3) held on.

Mack Hensley paced the Pioneers with 15 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Donta Hackler totaled 13 points and dished out four assists, Eric Dunbar added 12 points and Mason Britton snagged a team-high 10 boards. Dawson Wagner added seven points and four assists.

Breiydon Gilliam scored a team-best 13 points for Cherokee, getting nine of them after halftime to spark the comeback attempt. Carter Metz chipped in with 10 points.

SULLIVAN NORTH 65, PROVIDENCE ACADEMY 25

KINGSPORT — The Golden Raiders (13-9) jumped out to a 33-11 halftime lead and kept pulling away in the second half to defeat the Knights.

Trey Williams led the Sullivan North attack with 16 points. Isaiah Pruitt and Christian Hill each contributed 14.

Caleb Zepeda was high scorer for Providence Academy with seven points.

NORTH GREENE 64, CLOUDLAND 50

ROAN MOUNTAIN — Kendal Loftis scored 17 points to boost the Huskies to the road win.

Turner Bailey had 11 third-quarter points to finish with 15 points and Carson Whaley added 11 points for North Grenee.

Bentley Gilbert led the home team with 13 points, Hunter Shell finished with 12 and Hayden Shell added eight.

HAMPTON 54, SOUTH GREENE 43

GREENEVILLE — The Bulldogs outscored the Rebels 18-8 in the final quarter to pull out the tough victory on the road.

Jordan Bentley led Hampton with 18 points, and Rocky Croy came through with 12 points and six steals. Morgan Lyons pulled down eight rebounds.

Hunter Hartman had 12 points to lead South Greene.

GATE CITY 69, LEE HIGH 53

BEN HUR — Bradley Dean blazed in 38 points to lead the Blue Devils to a decisive Mountain 7 District victory over Lee High.

Jon Compton added 14 points for Gate City (9-4, 6-0), which led 37-27 at halftime.

Dylan Fannon paced the Generals (10-5, 2-4) with 21 points, and Tayler Tabor tallied 12.

J.I. BURTON 78, HONAKER 58

HONAKER — Trevor Culbertson dropped in 18 points to power the Raiders (10-5) to a dominating nondistrict road victory over the Tigers.

Jonah Cochrane added 16 points and Mikey Culbertson contributed 13 to the winning effort.

Grayson Honaker was the leading scorer Honaker with 29 points and Darren Taylor finished with 11.

TRI-CITIES CHRISTIAN 92, BETHEL CHRISTIAN, N.C. 79

SPRUCE PINE, N.C. — Adam Pigeon and Drew Correll racked up big numbers in three categories and Gavyn Etter knocked down five 3-pointers in a 27-point effort for the Eagles (12-5).

Pigeon finished with 22 points, 13 rebounds and six steals. Correll had 20 points, 12 rebounds and five assists for Tri-Cities Christian.

Cameron Skinner harvested a 25-point outing to lead the Crusaders. Lochlin Vance scored 23 and Michael Robertson had 13.

GIRLS

JOHNSON COUNTY 51, SULLIVAN SOUTH 47

MOUNTAIN CITY — Taylor Cox scored 18 points, Sadie Stout totaled 15 and the Lady Longhorns held on to beat the Lady Rebels in a Three Rivers matchup.

Emma Miller added nine points for Johnson County (13-7, 2-5).

McKenzie Littleton paced balanced Sullivan South (7-14, 1-6) with 10 points. Nicole Troutman had nine, and Allie Jordan and Alex Harris each scored eight.

DAVID CROCKETT 41, CHEROKEE 30

JONESBOROUGH — The Lady Pioneers led 24-11 midway through the second but managed only 17 more points the rest of the game, using their defense to keep the Lady Chiefs at bay.

Emma Gouge scored 12 points and Alyssa Suits finished with 10 points and a crucial seven steals for David Crockett (13-10, 4-3 Big 7).

Destiny Jarnigan had a strong second half when she scored seven of her 10 points for Cherokee (6-16, 0-7). She hit three treys in the game.

PROVIDENCE ACADEMY 43, SULLIVAN NORTH 38

KINGSPORT — Callie Burchette went 7-for-8 from the free-throw line and scored 13 points to lead the Lady Knights over the Lady Golden Raiders. Burchette came within a hair of a double-double after grabbing nine rebounds.

Katie Cross came through with 10 points and seven steals and Mary McAllister finished with nine points and 13 rebounds for Providence Academy.

North freshman Kierra Kotee scored 19 points and Sahara Bates added nine for Sullivan North.

NORTH GREENE 51, CLOUDLAND 40

ROAN MOUNTAIN — The Lady Huskies pulled away in the fourth quarter to hand the Lady Highlanders their first Watauga Valley Conference loss of the season.

Brooklyn Anderson netted 18 points to lead North Greene’s efforts. Breezy Savage finished with 13 points and Shelby Davenport was hot on her heels with 12 points.

Cloudland’s Kenzie Birchfield made a trio of 3-point shots for her nine points. Gracie Freeman and Mandy Benfield each had eight points.

SOUTH GREENE 77, HAMPTON 40

GREENEVILLE — The six-time state champion Lady Rebels outscored the Lady Bulldogs 31-6 in the second quarter to run away with the victory.

Kiley Collins had 26 points, 23 of them coming in the first half. Haley Kells added 16 points.

Hazen Brumitt was the lone Hampton player in double digits with 14 points.

GATE CITY 80, LEE HIGH 41

BEN HUR — The Lady Blue Devils nearly doubled up the Lady Generals (4-12, 0-6) in a Mountain 7 matchup.

Sarah Thompson poured in 20 points to power the win for Gate City (8-6, 4-2). Macey Mullins and Braylin Steele added 12 points apiece and Kayli Dunn chipped in 10.

ABINGDON 60, JOHN BATTLE 32

BRISTOL, Va. — Peyton Carter scored 17 points to lead the Lady Falcons (14-1, 6-0) in a blowout Mountain 7 victory over the host Lady Trojans (4-11, 1-5).

Emily Breeding added 11 points and Sarah Walters chipped in with 10 for Abingdon.

Bethany Smith led John Battle with 10 points.
