Newell heads all new K-Mets staff for upcoming season

KINGSPORT — The Kingsport Mets have their coaching staff in place for the upcoming Appalachian League season.

The staff features all new coaches, including a few beginning their first season within the New York Mets organization.

Chris Newell is the new manager of the K-Mets. Previously, Newell managed in the United Shore Professional Baseball League and scouted for the Tampa Bay Rays and New York Yankees organizations.

Pitching coach Glenn Abbott is in his 10th season in the Mets organization but first in Kingsport. Abbott was the pitching coach for the AAA affiliate for the past two seasons.

The hitting coach is Trey Hannam, who begins his first season in Kingsport as well as his first within the organization.

Bench coach Gilbert Gomez also is in his first season in Kingsport but his third as a coach within the Mets organization. He was the bench coach for the Columbia Fire Flies last season.

Gomez was an outfielder in the Mets organization from 2009-15, reaching as high as Class AA Binghamton.

Austin Dayton enters his first season as the athletic trainer for the K-Mets. Dayton has been with the Mets organization for two seasons. He spent 2018 at the New York Mets Academy in the Dominican Republic and last season with the Gulf Coast Mets.

Dayton is a Kingsport native and graduate of King.

Ayram Texidor enters his first season as the K-Mets’ performance coach. This will also be Texidor’s first season within the Mets organization.

The 2020 season marks the 40th year the K-Mets have played in Kingsport. They are set to open their Appy League campaign with a two-game set at Johnson City starting June 22.
